8 beer gardens you have to sit in this summer

The sun is out, the days are getting longer, and did someone say beer garden?

We went in search of the perfect South Australian outdoor oasis, and we found heaps! Here are eight of the best.

Cathedral Hotel – North Adelaide

Have you been searching for a beautiful heritage listed North Adelaide bar with a renovated rooftop? The search is over! The Cathedral took out SA’s Best Pub Burger in the 2016 SA Pub Burger Challenge, so you can be sure the classic pub fare won’t disappoint.

Here’s their menu, we recommend the beef burger and a glass of Jim Barry Watervale Riesling (Clare Valley).

Hotel Elliot – Port Elliot

Heading to Middleton for a surf? Or perhaps a beachside getaway is calling your name. Either way, this well-frequented local pub located in picturesque Port Elliot has everything you want, with a sensational beer garden to boot.

A  five-minute stroll from Horseshoe Bay and a short walk to whale spotting favourite Freeman Lookout, you can also catch the Cockle Train or Steam Ranger with the Port Elliot Railway Station situated just outside the hotel.

Here’s their menu, we recommend the Coopers Ale battered garfish fillets, served with the Elliot salad, chips and house aioli. Pair with a Coopers Pale Ale of course!

The Republic – Norwood

Built in 1880, the Republic Hotel has undergone extensive renovations with sleek results. This beer garden is perfect for a Saturday arvo with the girls after shopping your new summer look on The Parade.

Here’s their bar menu, we recommend the charcuterie board with cured meats, SA olives, cornichons and ciabatta, and pair with an Espresso Martini (or three).

Bridgewater Inn – Bridgewater

Only a 20-minute drive from Adelaide, the Bridgewater Inn is the perfect Adelaide Hills escape. Nestled among lush greenery, relax in the garden with unrivalled views of Cox’s Creek.

Here’s their menu, we recommend the Cox chicken breast schnitzel (500g) with one of their signature toppings such as parmigiana (napolitana sauce, cheese and ham),  Mexican (smashed avocado, bacon, jalapeno, sour cream),  Kilpatrick (bacon, Worcestershire sauce and cheese) or garlic prawns in a cream sauce. Match with a Rockford Alicante Bouchet rosé (Barossa Valley), you know it’s a good idea.

The Edinburgh Hotel – Mitcham

Ask anyone in the foothills of Southern Adelaide if they know The Ed, and not only will they know it, they’re probably sitting in its garden as you speak.

The famed Ed garden (renowned colloquially as one of Adelaide’s best) is bordered by pergolas, vines and lush gardens. The fellas love it here (and so do the kids).

Here’s their menu, we recommend The Ed signature flatbreads with heirloom and semi-dried tomato salsa with buffalo mozzarella, basil and pine nut pesto and smoked salmon with capers, feta, avocado, rocket and fresh lemon. Pair with a refreshing local gin and tonic served with citrus.

The Feathers Hotel – Burnside 

They won Best Beer Garden in Australia in 2017. Enough said.

Here’s their Terrace menu, we recommend any of the sociable plates, especially where cheese is involved. Match with a Howard Vineyard “Clover” sparkling wine (Adelaide Hills) and welcome, you’ve arrived in paradise.

Parkside Hotel – Parkside

It’s impossible not to salute the Parkside Hotel at how different it is from it’s former state. The recently renovated venue is turning heads as one of the main hangs for South Aussies this coming summer.

And not only is there current beer garden greatness, there is also future beer garden greatness to come! A family friendly outdoor area (separate from main beer garden) on its way with completion due in the next couple of days. There is also another outdoor area which is in the construction phase, due for opening in the coming months.

So make sure you check it out.

Port Admiral Hotel – Port Adelaide

This Port Adelaide pub, with its nautical vibes and bustling atmosphere, is quickly gaining a reputation as a bucket list must-see.

Adelaide’s oldest building (established in 1849 on Black Diamond Corner), the Port Admiral is a tip-of-the-hat to SA history and it’s really, really cool.

Here’s their menu, we recommend the Port Admiral fried chicken wings (500g or 1kg) with buffalo, Thai, sweet and sour or barbecue dressing. Pair with an Applewood Distillery whiskey or a Port Local house brew – a collaboration between the Port Admiral and Pirate Life.

Adelaide Hills watering holes reborn into bustling, stylish pubs

Adelaide Hills couple Julie and Ed Peter are behind the successful revamps of the Crafers and Uraidla hotels, both of which have helped transform the faces of the respective towns.

Both establishments now do a roaring trade on weekends and have helped introduce scores of food and wine lovers to the quiet and leafy area which once thrived on large-scale vegetable market gardening.

Last week, the couple’s renovation efforts paid off, with the Crafers Hotel crowned the Best Overall Hotel in South Australia at the 2018 Australian Hotel Association (AHA) SA Hotel Industry Awards for Excellence.

The dining hotspot also took awards for Best Superior Hotel Accommodation, Best Redeveloped Hotel, Best Apprentice Development and Training, and was a joint winner for Best Bistro (Metropolitan).

The Uraidla Hotel was also a joint winner for Best Bar Presentation and Experience (Metropolitan).

Julie and Ed, who also run wine various businesses including Kaesler in the Barossa Valley, purchased the Crafers Hotel in 2014 with shareholders Brett and Sarah Matthews and Jodi and Scott Brumby.

Over three years they transformed the historic yet rundown establishment into a French-inspired and stylish gastropub, offering local produce and a wine list featuring drops from as close as Balhannah and Kuitpo and as far as Burgundy, France.

The menu boasts a strong focus on local produce, from Smoky Bay oysters, SA mussels and locally caught squid.

“Nowadays, hotels are more food-based with higher quality offerings,” says Julie.

“I think now people are more discerning about what they’re eating and drinking.

“On our busiest day we put on close to 200 meals at Crafers.

“Sundays are our busiest, people love to have Sunday lunches.”

In 2016, 5km away in Uraidla, the Peters purchased the Uraidla Hotel, a pub seeping in history but left in a ghostly and abandoned state for many years.

The 151-year-old establishment was brought back to life, with the insides stripped bare and Julie collecting antique pieces to spruce up the interior, including vintage lamps that hang upside down from the high ceiling and beer kegs quirkily used as urinals.

The end result is a 1930s art deco style space, featuring a large front bar, upstairs function area and plush sofas by open fires.

With experience renovating houses in the Hills, France and Singapore, Julie says she is drawn to the character and history of old buildings.

“With the Uraidla Hotel, it had loads of character,” she says.

“The more derelict it was, the more I loved it.”

While both the Crafers and Uraidla hotels focus on delivering a high quality wining and dining experience, Julie says patrons can still feel at home.

“People use our hotels as an extension of their own living rooms,” she says.

“The concept at Crafers is that if you want to spend $10,000 on a bottle of wine you can.

“But you can also sit by the fire with a bag of chips. We just want people to feel comfortable.”

Next door to the hotel is the Uraidla Brewery and the Uraidla Republic café and bakery, also owned by the Peters.

Uraidla’s main street can also attribute its revival to the efforts of community group Imagine Uraidla, as well as the addition of the eclectic restaurant Lost in a Forest.

Uraidla’s general store has also undergone a recent upgrade.

Julie says the food and wine boost has been welcomed by local residents.

“I know that it (the success of the hotel) has stopped some people from moving away from Uraidla,” she says.

“It’s also benefited local employment because between Uraidla and Crafers we employ 100 people and many of them are from the area.”

The Crafers Hotel will go on to compete at the National AHA Awards on the Gold Coast in September.

Top 10 SA pubs to catch the Grand Final action

Front bars across SA will be pouring pints and flying flags this Saturday for what will (hopefully) be the greatest day the Adelaide Football Club has seen since 1998.

We’ve compiled a list of the Top 10 SA pubs to catch the thrills and spills of the AFL Grand Final Day, whether it’s in the city or outback South Australia.

Not only do pubs create a pumping atmosphere on grand final day, but they are also pretty important to the SA economy.

A 15% increase in turnover in the hotel industry could lead to the creation of 2049 more jobs.

So unravel that Crows scarf and head down to one of these watering holes! #ichoosesa

1. THE ARKABA (Adelaide Metro)
There’ll be no standing on tip toes at this pub to catch a glimpse of the game on the screen. The Ark has big TVs to capture all the action.

A players sweeps will also entertain the masses, and free schooners will be awarded every time your player gets a goal. (Drink responsibly if you pick Eddie Betts).

2. THE FEATHERS HOTEL (Adelaide Metro)
Named best Australian beer garden at the national Australian Hotel Association Awards recently, The Feathers’ celebrations kick off from 12.30pm.

Footy food platters, drink specials and post-game entertainment will be on offer, $35 per person.

3. THE HAVELOCK (Adelaide Metro)
Word is that the ‘Havy’ will be a safe haven for Richmond fans. For $70pp, enjoy four hours of drinks and a gourmet barbecue lunch.

For $30pp, footy food will roll out every quarter, plus bites before the game, while exclusive drink specials will be available.

The Coopers Alehouse in Adelaide’s CBD is putting on a lock-in lunch.

4. THE ORIGINAL COOPERS ALEHOUSE (Pulteney Street, Adelaide)
The alehouse is putting on a lock-in lunch ($65pp) featuring finger food, selected tap beers, wine and soft drink siren to siren.

Cheer on the boys at the Port Noarlunga Hotel, which is having an all day happy hour.

At half-time an U.G.L.Y barbecue will start sizzling, with donations going to the Leukaemia Foundation.

6. THE RENMARK CLUB (Riverland)
Two game-day packages will be on offer. One is pints of house beer and cider, glasses of wine and half-time snacks ($60pp).

The other is pints of house beer and cider, glasses of wine, house spirits and half-time snacks, $120pp.

7. PRAIRIE HOTEL (Outback)
The Prairie Hotel, in Parachilna 500km from Adelaide, never has a TV but this weekend calls for change.

The Prairie will bring in a telly screening the game in their new Stratco pavilion.

This pub is also renowned for its native Flinders dishes featuring kangaroo mettwurst, emu paté, and bush tomato chilli jam.

8. PORT LINCOLN HOTEL (Eyre Peninsula)
This seaside pub is part-owned by Crows legend Mark Ricciuto, so they will be playing the game live and loud.

Adelaide band Keep the Change will play live after the game.

9. THE PENNESHAW HOTEL (Kangaroo Island)
Feeling knowledgeable on game day? Try your hand at the AFL 20-question quiz, while a sausage sizzle keeps hunger at bay.

The whole pub will be decorated in Crows colours. Festivities start from 1pm.

10. MARION BAY TAVERN (Yorke Peninsula)
Six plasmas with surround sound and a prize for the best dressed couple are bound to create some noise.

The pub is also hosting The Yorkes Surfing Classic, which is one of the biggest amateur surfing events in SA, so it will be a huge day for the bay.
